DESCRIPTION: If you're tired of trash cluttering our streams and parks, join Lenexa's newest volunteer effort! Adopt-A-Spot offers groups AND individuals the opportunity to have a lasting and long-term impact on the community by keeping our public spaces clean and litter-free.

REQUIREMENTS:  You can adopt a spot by committing to clean it three times a year for two years. Adopt-A-Spot is flexible, allowing you to choose the dates and times for cleanups, as well as the spot you want to adopt – as long as it’s not already spoken for. You can choose from spots all over the city: a park, trail, stream or even a neighborhood. This opportunity is available to all ages and activity levels. Children under the age of 18 need a parent or guardian’s permission to participate. The City of Lenexa will provide adopters with gloves and trashbags for the cleanups.

Coffee Walk and Talk

DESCRIPTION: Description: Do you want to meet new people, get exercise and volunteer at the same time? As a leader of this group you have an opportunity to help create a healthier community and establish relationships with fellow Lenexans. The Coffee, Walk and Talk Citizen Leader is responsible for communicating location changes due to inclement weather, assist in choosing monthly parks and welcoming new walkers. Leader is responsible for making sure everyone has a walking partner and nobody is left behind on the walk.

REQUIREMENTS:  Requirements: Be able to walk approximately two miles and attend coffee regularly on Tuesday’s from 9:00 a.m-11:00 a.m. Available to make phone calls to class participants between 8:00-8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning if necessary. Volunteer will be trained and assisted by Lenexa Park Naturalist.

DESCRIPTION: : The Lenexa Arts Council was created to promote and encourage public programs to further public awareness in the fine and performing arts. In addition, the council serves as a clearing house for scheduling exhibits, recitals, lectures or other artistic activities with the City as well as recommendations and advice for further artistic activities within the City. This nine-member board meets regularly in a public setting and is responsible for reviewing all plans, plats and replats of land designated for public use. The Planning Commission also makes recommendations to the Governing Body concerning the building of all private structures, the location of streets, transportation and communication facilities, public buildings and public grounds. Event Recycling Ambassador

DESCRIPTION: Does it frustrate you when you see someone put a plastic bottle in the trash when there is a recycling bin right next to it? If so, help us take action by volunteering to gently remind people to recycle their waste at Lenexa's festivals. As a Event Recycling Ambassador you will be responsible for speaking to festival goers as they dispose of waste by encouraging them to sort it into the proper recycling or trash bins. Ambassadors will not be sorting the waste themselves. The Ambassadors will monitor waste bags replacing full bags with new liners. Beginning and end shifts will help with setting up and tearing down recycling stations.

REQUIREMENTS:  All volunteers must be 10 years or older, if between the ages of 10-15 volunteer must be supervised by an adult. The volunteer shifts will be approximately four hours, including training time. Volunteer shifts are typically Friday and/or Saturday.

June 25-26, Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park - The Lenexa BBQ Battle hosts almost 200 teams, all smoking it up to prove they have the best BBQ in Kansas. Besides the responsiblities listed above, ambassadors will be speaking with teams encouraging them to be a "Green Team" by recycling at their booths. Giving out recycling bins to teams and providing bags for recycling. Shifts available are Friday 8am-12pm, 12pm-4pm, 4pm-8pm and 8pm-11:30pm; Saturday shifts are 9am-12:30pm, 12pm-3:30pm and 3:00-6:30pm

August 14, Ad Astra Pool and Park - Tails on the Trails is an event for pets and people to enjoy together. Event recycling ambassador shifts are from 9am-11:30pm and 11:30pm-2pm.
Spinach FestivalOPEN
September 11, at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park - The Lenexa Spinach Festival is a day to celebrate Lenexa's heritage. Many family friendly events and acitivities are planned along with the art, fine craft and antique show. Event recycling ambassador shifts are from 8am-11:30am, 11:00am-2:30pm, 2:00-5:30pm.
Lenexa Chili ChallengeOPEN
October 15-16, Old Town Lenexa (Santa Fe and Pflumm) - Over a 150 contestants cook in this fun fall event. Event recycling ambassadors will also be responsible for encouraging teams to become a "Green Team" and provide teams with recycling bags as needed. Shifts are Friday 3:30pm-6:30pm and 6:30pm-10pm; Saturday 9am-12pm, 12pm-3pm and 3pm-6pm.

Great Lenexa BBQ Battle

DESCRIPTION: The Great Lenexa BBQ Battle, Kansas State Championship will be held Friday and Saturday, June 25-26, 2010, at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park. Hundreds of volunteers are needed throughout the weekend to assist with various aspects of the event. This competition event is enjoyed by 20,000+ spectators and barbeque teams come from across the nation to participate in this nationally recognized event. Come out and be a part of this saucy event!

BBQ JudgeFULL
During the contest, 240+ judges are needed to judge seven meat categories. Judges are required to attend the entire competition from 11am-3pm. Attendance at the training session on Thursday, June 24 at 6:30 pm at the Lenexa Community Center is recommended. KCBS certified judges preferred.
BBQ Judge - Table CaptainFULL
Approximately 36 Table Captains are needed during the competition. Table Captains lead their table of judges throughout the judging process. Table Captains do not judge BBQ entries. Responsibilities: deliver samples to table for judging, maintain judges' slips and, most importantly, check each slip for completeness. Table Captains must be in attendance for the entire competition from 11am-3pm. Each Table Captain will receive a complimentary "Table Captain" shirt.

Midnight Bike and Hike

DESCRIPTION: This is your chance to help a local service club raise funds for their charities and assist the Lenexa Parks and Recreation Department in this 15th annual Bike event. This year, we have added a twist to the traditional family biking event. The new location allows us to add a hiking portion to this year’s event. The new route starts and ends at Black Hoof Park in Lenexa. The route is a 6 mile ride with the opportunity to ride multiple loops. Taking a moonlight walk along the trail to the award-winning Lake Lenexa dam spillway provides the opportunity for riders to enjoy this new addition. Volunteers are needed to help assist in lighting of the courses (with flashlights), course monitoring, directions along the route, bike rack check in area, registration of riders and hikers etc. 50-75 volunteers are used and needed to assist us in this effort. Who needs sleep, you can sleep after it is all over.

REQUIREMENTS:  All volunteers must be 14 years and older. If younger than 15 years of age, volunteers must be supervised by an adult. There are different shifts available.

Good at organizing? Every event needs help prior to, and after the hours. Unload and distribute supplies to designated areas, hang banners, signs and set up tables, chairs, and check with exhibitors to meet their needs. Shifts: 8 a.m. – noon; noon – 4 p.m. (can work with volunteers if need extra flexibility)
Carnival games hostOPEN
Help us run activities and carnival games for kids. Games and prizes will be provided. Volunteers will interact with children and their parents in playing with the games, monitoring prize distribution, communicating rules and make sure the kids are enjoying themselves -- safely. Shifts: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.; 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Passport prize patrol OPEN
At Waterfest, every guest receives a passport to carry around to the educational booths. Those who visit every booth earn chance to win great prizes. Passport booth volunteers need to be eager and ready to answer questions, collect completed event passports and help with prize giveaways. Shifts: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.; 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Recycling ambassadorOPEN
Educate festival goers as they dispose of waste by encouraging them to recycle. You will not be sorting the waste yourself, but will help monitor use, replacing full bags with new liners. Shifts: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.; 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
