DESCRIPTION: Share your photography skills by volunteering at Lenexa events or helping with other special projects. Lenexa is known as the "City of Festivals" and we can always use assistance in capturing these special community moments by a volunteer photographer. Photographers may also be requested to photograph recreation classes, city projects, and department events.
REQUIREMENTS: Volunteer must be age 16 or older. Must be able to walk around event for approximately 2-4 hours at a time. Comfortable approaching event participants to photograph. Volunteer will use their own camera. Volunteer will sign Volunteer Photography Agreement and agree to all requirements within the agreement. Must provide city a copy of photos within 48 hours of event and allows city to use photos with unlimited rights. Volunteer will retain the ownership rights of photographs. Program manager will e-mail the Volunteer Photography Agreement after volunteer has applied for position.

DESCRIPTION: If you're tired of trash cluttering our streams and parks, join Lenexa's newest volunteer effort! Adopt-A-Spot offers groups AND individuals the opportunity to have a lasting and long-term impact on the community by keeping our public spaces clean and litter-free.
REQUIREMENTS: You can adopt a spot by committing to clean it three times a year for two years. Adopt-A-Spot is flexible, allowing you to choose the dates and times for cleanups, as well as the spot you want to adopt – as long as it’s not already spoken for. You can choose from spots all over the city: a park, trail, stream or even a neighborhood.
This opportunity is available to all ages and activity levels. Children under the age of 18 need a parent or guardian’s permission to participate. The City of Lenexa will provide adopters with gloves and trashbags for the cleanups.

The participants pay a $4 fee to participate

DESCRIPTION: Are you interested in making the environment better by restoring our natural park lands to native plants? Shrub honeysuckle is an invasive species in Kansas and when it is allowed to grow it blocks out light from reaching native plants. Left to grow the honeysuckle will reduce the diverse plant life into a monoculture which is unhealthy for wildlife. Invasive plants tend to have shorter roots, when invasive plants are near a stream it can make the soil unstable and prone to erosion.
REQUIREMENTS: Adults preferred, children must be 15 years old all children under the age of 18 must have an adult volunteering with them. Volunteer must be able to use loppers and other hand tools appropriately.

DESCRIPTION: The Hershey's Track and Field Games are a success thanks to our many dedicated volunteers. If you love working with children and want to encourage physical fitness volunteer today. The Hershey Track and Field Games are held every year for youth ages 6-14. The event allows them to compete on the regional level and to advance clear to the national level as they win (ages 9-14 for advancement). It will take place at Shawnee Mission North High School, 7401 Johnson Drive on Saturday, April 28.
REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers should be able to stand for three hours, be able to bend down to measure if assisting with softball throw or standing long jump.

DESCRIPTION: Lenexa Parks and Recreation is partnering with Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to host a fishing derby. The derby will take place in Black Hoof Park at Lake Lenexa on June 9, 2012, 9 a.m. - noon. Children ages 6-12 will participate. The derby is a catch and release derby. Volunteers are needed to assist with measuring fish length and assist families that may not be comfortable fishing.
REQUIREMENTS: Must be 13 years or older. If between the ages of 13-15 adult supervision is required. Volunteers must be comfortable with assisting participants measure fish. Volunteers duties may include helping children take fish off the hook.

DESCRIPTION: The Great Lenexa BBQ Battle, Kansas State Championship will be held Friday and Saturday, June 22-23, 2012, at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park. Hundreds of volunteers are needed throughout the weekend to assist with various aspects of the event. This competition event is enjoyed by 20,000+ spectators and barbeque teams come from across the nation to participate in this nationally recognized event. Come out and be a part of this saucy event!

During the contest 240+ judges are needed to judge seven meat categories. Judges are required to attend the entire competition from 11 am - 3 pm. Attendance at the training session on Thursday, June 21 at 6:30 pm at the Lenexa Community Center is recommended. KCBS certified judges preferred.

Approximately 36 Table Captains are needed during the competition. Table Captains lead their table of judges throughout the judging process. Table Captains do not judge BBQ entries. Responsibilties: deliver samples to table for judging, maintain judges' slips and, most importantly, check each slip for completeness. Table Captains must be in attendance for the entire competition from 11 am - 3 pm. Each Table Captain will receive a complimentary "Table Captain" shirt.

DESCRIPTION: This is your chance to help a local service club raise funds for their charities and assist the Lenexa Parks and Recreation Department in this 17th annual Bike event. The route starts and ends at Black Hoof Park in Lenexa. The route is a 6 mile ride with the opportunity to ride multiple loops. Taking a moonlight walk along the trail to the award-winning Lake Lenexa dam spillway provides the opportunity for riders to enjoy this new addition. Volunteers are needed to help assist in lighting of the courses (with flashlights), course monitoring, directions along the route, bike rack check in area, registration of riders and hikers etc. 50-75 volunteers are used and needed to assist us in this effort. Who needs sleep, you can sleep after it is all over. Event shifts will range from 8 p.m.- 2:30 a.m.

DESCRIPTION: Each summer, Lenexa Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Lenexa Animal Control, sponsors a day to celebrate pets. The 2012 Tails on the Trails pet festival, held on Saturday, August 11 at the Ad Astra Swimming Pool and surrounding trails and shelter area, features pet related vendors, educational demonstrations and a pet show. Visitors may bring their pets to compete in the pet/owner look-a-like contest, participate in the popular dog swim or shop for some great pet merchandise.
REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers will assist with the event. If under the age of 15 volunteer must be supervised by an adult. The volunteer shifts will be approximately four hours, including training time. Must be able to stand for shift. Must be comfortable interacting with human and animal participants.

DESCRIPTION: The Lenexa Chili Challenge is October 19-20, 2012 in Old Town Lenexa. This Midwest Regional Open Championship hosts 150 plus teams to compete in the CASI ( meat only) or Homestyle chili contest. The contest also included entries in the Salsa and Wing contest. Along with many great samples to taste, there will be games, live music, concessions, vendors, and children's activities.

DESCRIPTION: Does it frustrate you when you see someone put a plastic bottle in the trash when there is a recycling bin right next to it? If so, help us take action by volunteering to gently remind people to recycle their waste at Lenexa's festivals. As a Event Recycling Ambassador you will be responsible for speaking to festival goers as they dispose of waste by encouraging them to sort it into the proper recycling or trash bins. Ambassadors will not be sorting the waste themselves. The Ambassadors will monitor waste bags replacing full bags with new liners. Beginning and end shifts will help with setting up and tearing down recycling stations.
REQUIREMENTS: All volunteers must be 10 years or older, if between the ages of 10-15 volunteer must be supervised by an adult (unless otherwise noted). The volunteer shifts will be approximately four hours, including training time. Volunteer shifts are typically Friday and/or Saturday.

Besides the responsibilities listed above, volunteers will speak to teams encouraging them to be a "Green Team" by recycling at their booths and giving out recycling bins to teams and providing bags for recycling.
