Take steps to stay safe
Christmas tree safety
Christmas trees account for hundreds of fires each year. The U.S. Fire Administration and Lenexa Fire Department provide tips to
help you enjoy a safe holiday season.
Most tree fires are caused by shorts in electrical lights or candles that are placed too close to the branches. Never leave tree lights
on unattended or burn candles near the tree. Inspect wires and do not use if they are frayed or have cracked sockets.
Trees become more of a fire hazard when they are too dry, so be sure to keep them watered. Do not place your tree close to a heat
source such as a fireplace or heat vent. When disposing of your tree, never put branches or needles in a fireplace or wood-burning
stove. For more information, contact the Fire Department at (913) 888-6380.
Lock your car, hide your valuables
One of the leading causes of auto thefts in cold weather is unattended, unlocked, and running vehicles. Leaving your vehicle
unlocked and unattended while warming it up not only gives criminals an easy opportunity to steal your vehicle, it’s also a violation of city
code. Please be sure to lock your car when you warm it up this winter.
Also, while doing your holiday shopping, remember to hide purses and other valuables that are left in your car. Criminals often watch
for easy targets including distracted shoppers or valuables left in unattended vehicles. If you see someone acting suspicious or loitering in
a shopping area, report the incident immediately by calling 911. For more information, call Crime Prevention at (913) 477-7245.
