Upgrade your detector
Dual sensor is recommended
Smoke detectors that are 10 years old or older should be replaced, even if it appears that they still work, because they could have delayed responses. Additionally, recent technology has improved in sensors of newer detectors. The Fire Department, along with the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends installing dual sensor smoke detectors, which use ionization and photoelectric detection. This enables the detector to recognize slow building, dense-smoke fires or fast growing, flame-type fires. Be sure to check the batteries monthly, and change batteries every six months. It is also recommended that you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. For more information contact the Fire Department at (913) 888-6380.
