Santa Fe Trail Drive improvements nearly finished

Project first in metro to use environmentally friendly LED street lights

Construction is wrapping up on the project to improve Santa Fe Trail Drive from Noland Road to Park Street in Old Town. Crews reopened the street two months ahead of schedule, and now are finishing the street light installation. The entire project should be finished by the end of the year.

This project is the first in the Kansas City area to include environmentally friendly, energy efficient LED street lights. The new lights, which will retain the same period style of Old Town, will be installed along Santa Fe Trail Drive from Pflumm Road to 92nd Street, along the Old Town store fronts, and along Pflumm from Santa Fe to 92nd Street.

The new lights are rated for 50,000 hours of life, which equates to about 10 years of maintenance-free use. The city’s current standard street lights have a service life of only five years.

Other features include better color rendition and nighttime visibility, dark sky compliance, and the new lights will use about two thirds less energy.
