Be a Canine for Clean Water
Pet waste is not a fertilizer. In fact, it actually carries diseases that are harmful to other animals and even humans. That’s why we need you and your best furry friend to be a part of the solution to help keep our water clean!
In Lenexa alone, there are about two dogs for every person dogs per square mile, each depositing about a half-pound (on average) of waste a day. In just one year, those dogs contribute more than 6.3 million pounds of waste.
Worse, each gram of dog waste contains more than 21 million bacteria. When bacteria accumulate in our streams, ponds and lakes, it can make the water unsafe for fishing, wading and other recreation.
What can you do to help?
Take the Canines for Clean Water pledge! We, the dogs of Lenexa, pledge to help protect our streams by:
- picking up after ourselves
- staying on-leash in wetlands and other sensitive areas
- avoiding contact with streams and wildlife
- spreading this important message to other dog owners in our community

Interested in helping educate your neighborhood, business or another area of the community about why it’s important to pick up after your pet? We’re in the process of developing check-out kits that you can borrow for a few weeks. Check back in April 2012 for more news.
