In a time of “doing more with less,” the division has implemented some innovative and efficient practices such as maintaining fleet size by using Hook Loader units. The loaders enable many of the trucks to be multi-faceted in use. For example, a salt hopper and spreader unit can be loaded on the truck bed and used in snow and ice control operations, and then the same truck could be used to haul pavement debris from a street milling project in the spring with a different loader unit. The Fleet Division has started using Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL) tracking and mapping technology with street sweeper and snow plow trucks. The advantage is that AVL records which streets have been plowed or swept, and can locate any of the vehicles that are equipped with the technology.

Fleet staff have adopted a number of sustainable practices in keeping with Lenexa’s commitment to sustainability, such as recycling vehicle oil and batteries, anti-freeze, and various metals. Lenexa’s fleet of vehicles, which includes five hybrid vehicles, adheres to an anti-idling policy that helps reduce emissions and contribute to better air quality. The division has been saving paper for more than four years with their paperless work order system that removes a paper trail by making the entire process is electronic. Little or no paper is used for anything else within the division as well.
The Fleet Division staff work diligently around the clock to ensure all city vehicles are running smoothly and safely for the city staff that depend on them.
Mission Statement:
