Mace has become one of the more popular forms of self defense for the general public. There are many forms of mace, some that cause irritation to the eyes and nose, and others that affect the nervous system. The one sold for use by the public, is the nose and eye irritant, commonly known as "Pepper Mace." This mace causes the eyes to turn red and begin watering immediately if an effective application is sprayed into the face. The nose will begin to run, and there will also be a burning sensation to the facial area. As you can imagine, the mace could possibly render the attacker incapacitated for a short period of time. Since it is a spray, there is a chance that it could also affect the victim because of overspray or by spraying it into the wind and having it blow back into your own face.
Mace can be purchased at local hardware and department stores in the area. Mace sells for about $5.00 to $12.00, depending on where it is purchased, and the size of the container is. A key chain model may provide one or two effective shots to the face, and will sell for around $5.00.
SAFETY WARNING:
Don’t get lulled into a false sense of security just because you carry mace or pepper spray. This is a self-defense weapon. You need to make sure you have the proper mindset to use it if you need it, and not have it taken away from you, creating even more of a problem if it’s used against you.
PROCEDURE:
Mace should be directed into the face of the attacker, preferably in an upwind situation. Spray only enough to affect the attacker, save some in case they return. Leave the area and go to the nearest phone, and call 9-1-1.
