Harassing phone calls

What to do
If you're receiving harassing or threatening phone calls:

  • Contact the police dispatcher at 913.477.7301, or go to the police station to file a report.
  • Keep track of the calls, noting the date, time, and conversation that took place.
  • Listen for background noise, if possible. This can sometimes lead us to a location from where the calls are being made.
  • Consider purchasing a caller I.D. system that displays the number of the caller.
  • If you have an answering machine, use the machine to screen and record your calls. When you file your police report, provide the tape to the officer. We will use this tape in court if necessary, so we may keep your tape as evidence.
  • We may contact the phone company and ask that a call tracer be put on your line. Normally, the phone company will not put a tap on the line until a police report has been filed.
  • To avoid future calls, the phone company can assist by changing your phone number, either temporarily or permanently.
