Permits
Lenexa does not require a permit to carry a firearm. However, the State of Kansas issues concealed carry permits for those who pass a background check and successfully attend a firearms training session.

To apply for a permit, contact the Johnson County Sheriff's office at 913.791.5800. To qualify for a license, you must be:

  • a U.S. citizen, a resident of the county where the application is being made, and a Kansas resident for at least six months
  • at least 21 years old
  • free from any physical infirmity that prevents safe handling of a weapon

For more information on the permit process, visit the Johnson County Sheriff’s office website at www.jocosheriff.org or call 913.791.5800.

Do I need to register a firearm?

The registering of firearms is not required in Lenexa.

However, weapons owners should record the serial number, manufacturer, model and caliber of their weapons, and store this information in a safe place. Serial numbers can be entered into a nationwide computer system that allows police officers to track the weapon if it is ever lost or stolen. This system does not track the sale of weapons, only lost and stolen weapons reported to the police.
