Congratulations to the 28th Class of our Citizen’s Police Academy who graduated on April 22, 2009.

We are now accepting applications for the Spring 2010 class which will be held on Wednesday evenings from Feb. 10 through April 28. Classes normally are held from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 9 p.m. For more information, contact MPO Dan Friesen at 913-477-7245 or by email.

Topics include patrol procedures, criminal law, officer safety, a tour of the Adult Detention Center in Olathe, traffic enforcement, K-9, DARE, firearms, investigations, crime scene processing, crime prevention, tactical unit and other related topics. The goals of the Citizens’ Police Academy are to educate the community about the structure and activities of the police department and to give attendees the opportunity to meet and interact with the officers of the department.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, live or work in Lenexa and have no criminal record. Criminal history background checks will be conducted on applicants. Class size is limited for this popular program.

Applications can be obtained by contacting the Public Service Officer (front lobby of the police station) or
online. If you apply on-line, please follow up your application with a call to 913-477-7245 to confirm receipt.

There is no fee for attending the Citizens’ Police Academy program.

The CPA programs were introduced in 1993 and quickly became quite popular with the citizens of Lenexa. Fall and Spring courses usually have about 20 attendees. Scores of the CPA graduates wished to remain connected in an active way with the Police Department. To that end, the Department designed various volunteer programs that, after specialized training (Masters Courses), CPA volunteers can work in.

Introductory CPA Programs

The goal of CPA is twofold: to educate Lenexa citizens about the structure and activities of their Police Department, and to provide an opportunity to get to know the men and women of the LPD personally, producing informed and educated citizens, making them more productive within their own neighborhoods. The 11-week CPA course meets one night each week for 2.5 hours. Classes are held at Police Headquarters at 12500 W. 87 St. Pkwy. Topics covered in the CPA class include overviews of the LPD organization and structure, recruiting, and training. Instructors are drawn from personnel assigned to each division and most operational units of the Department.

Masters Courses

The goal of the Masters Volunteer Program is to provide activities for volunteers to participate in to achieve both personal satisfaction and perform community service. This is an example of community policing, in its purest form... the community policing itself. CPA Masters Courses vary in length depending on the topic. Additional qualifications to CPA graduation exist for certain programs. Application does not guarantee acceptance or participation. Some courses are pass/fail. There is no fee to apply or to participate.
