Lenexa Chili Challenge

Mid West Regional Open Championship

Presented by 94.9 KCMO

As a sanctioned contest, The Lenexa Chili Challenge, Mid West Regional Open Championship will follow the 2010 Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc. (CASI) Rules and Regulations (KCBS). For complete C.A.S.I. rules and regulations go to www.chili.org

ADDITIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS TO 2010 CASI RULES:

RULES & REGULATIONS

1. COOKS MEETING: The Cooks meeting will be held Saturday morning October 16, 2010 at 9:00 am at the Lenexa Community Center. The Contest Director and the Chief Judge will give final instructions and answer any questions at that time.

2. JUDGING: Judging for both categories of chili (CASI and Home Style) and Salsa will start at NOON on Saturday, October 16, 2010. Judging for Hot Wings begin at 1:30 pm on Saturday, October 16, 2010.

3. SAMPLE TURN IN TIMES WILL BE:

Salsa 10:30 am (Lenexa Community Center)

CASI Chili Noon (Lenexa Community Center)

Home Style Chili Noon (Lenexa Community Center)

Hot Wings 1:30 pm (Jerry’s Bait Shop)

4. All chili must be prepared at the cook’s assigned booth. Each contestant is responsible for providing all needed cooking utensils and equipment. Contestants must use grills or self-contained gas cook stoves. NO GROUND FIRES WILL BE PERMITTED. All chili must be cooked from scratch on site the day of the cook off. All chili must be prepared in the open (no cooking in motor homes, etc.). There will be NO electrical hook-ups available. Generators are not permitted. Each team is responsible for the cleanliness of its site during the contest and for its clean up afterwards. Non-cooperation of the cleanliness standard may result in disqualification from future Lenexa Chili Challenges. Chili MUST NOT be accessible to the public or handled in an unsanitary manner. Everyone within the confines of the cooking and serving area MUST wear shirts and shoes AT ALL TIMES. For safety reasons, contestants WILL NOT be able to remove any vehicles from the site until all the awards have been announced and the public has vacated the site.

5. No more than one (1) quart of chili from each division of each contestant’s chili will be collected at the end of the cooking period for purposes of judging. Each contestant will be allowed to enter (1) one sample from each division. Teams may not enter more than one Home style or CASI chili.

6. There will be two divisions of chili judged in this contest: “CASI Chili” and “Home Style Chili.”

    CASI CHILI is described as any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with chili peppers, various other spices and other ingredients, with the exception of items such as beans or spaghetti, which are strictly forbidden.

    HOME STYLE CHILI is described as any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with various spices and other ingredients, which may include any variety of beans, spaghetti, or other fillers.

    SALSA is described as any kind of sauce containing various spices, herbs, etc. that can be used as a dip for chips. Excessively hot salsas will be disqualified. Cooks must be willing to eat their own salsa.

    HOT WINGS is described as a chicken wing either whole or part that may be cooked with various spices and other ingredients. Wings must be cooked on site. All cooking methods (deep fried, grilled, smoked, etc.) accepted for judging. Excessively hot wings will be disqualified. Cooks must be willing to eat their own wings.

7. In order to be good neighbors with the Old Town Lenexa businesses, contestants may check in and set up between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 15 and between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16. All vehicles must leave the site and will be denied access to the site after 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16. Any contestants needing special arrangements need to call Jim Finlen at 913-477-7100. We will try to accommodate you as best we can. All props, motor homes, vehicles, tents, or any equipment related to these items may not exceed the boundaries of the assigned space. If you need more than the assigned space, you should let us know so we can try to accommodate your request. In consideration of our neighbors and the fellow contestants, bands, combos and/or loud amplification of music is prohibited after 11:00 p.m. on Friday, October 15 and all day on Saturday, October 16.

8. Teams will consist of one (1) Chief Cook and at most four (4) Assistant Cooks. No cooking or preparation of any kind may begin until the ingredients have been inspected. For HOME STYLE CHILI, pre-cooked or canned beans may be added. Inspectors will be available during the check in times. Once the ingredients have been inspected, they may not leave the site. All meat used in any chili must start out raw. No precooked, pre-salted or pre-marinated meats are allowed. Sausage need not be ground and/or stuffed on site, but it must be raw.

9. The decisions of the Lenexa Chili Challenge Director, the Chief Judge, and/or the judges are final.

10. Refund of team entry fees will be given ONLY IF a replacement can be found for your booth space.

11. The entry deadline for booth assignments is Friday, September 24, 2010. All entries received after September 24, 2010 will receive first available booth placement.

12. Security will be provided from 10:00 p.m. on Friday, October 15 through 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 16. The City of Lenexa Kansas, its employees, volunteers and officers and the sponsors and their employees, volunteers and officers are not liable for theft of or damage to personal or group property and are not liable for any and all injuries suffered during the event.

13. EXCLUSIVITY RULE: The Lenexa Chili Challenge, Mid West Regional Open Championship relies on corporate sponsors to promote and underwrite the event. Because of their involvement, major corporate sponsors have exclusive rights to distribute their products and display signage. Therefore, teams competing in the event and/or other companies may not distribute products or display signage for companies that directly or indirectly compete with the major corporate sponsors of the Lenexa Chili Challenge.

14. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: Alcoholic beverages are allowed in the event site during the Chili Challenge as per City Ordinance 3-9G-2. Only alcoholic beverages brought in by teams during the check-in process (see rule #3), or purchased at the concession area will be allowed. No “carry in” alcohol is allowed at the contest. It is the responsibility of the Chief Cooks of all teams to ensure that only legal consumption of alcoholic beverages occurs in their booths. Excessive use of alcoholic beverages may be grounds for disqualification. Violations may result in disqualification and/or in arrest.

15. DOGS AND OTHER ANIMALS/PETS: The Lenexa Chili Challenge allows seeing eye dogs and other service dogs for people with disabilities. No other dogs or pets are allowed at the Lenexa Chili Challenge or on the grounds at any time.

16. Any person with a disability needing to be accommodated for the purpose of attending or participating in the Lenexa Chili Challenge needs to call Jim Finlen

    at (913) 477-7100. Please give us at least 48 hours notice to arrange for your accommodation.

17. Awards for the Lenexa Chili Challenge will be presented at the conclusion of the judging process. Tentative time of awards is scheduled for 4:00 pm on October 16, 2010. The following shall serve as the order for awards;
