All construction projects must have appropriate inspections to ensure compliance with current building codes and local ordinances. When your building permit is issued, we’ll let you know which commercial inspections or residential inspections are required for your project.
Please be aware that an approved inspection keeps your permit active. Permits expire after 120 days without an approved inspection and will be subject to reinstatement fees.
Inspection scheduling and status
The City of Lenexa Automated Building Inspection System is an automated system that allows callers to use a touch-tone phone to schedule inspections and request information 24 hours a day, seven days a week. See the IVR inspection scheduling brochure for complete information.
You can also schedule inspections online through Citizen Access or contact a customer service representative Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. by calling 913.477.7500.
Penalty for commencing work before permit issuance
When it is determined through an investigation that work has commenced on a building, structure, electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system before obtaining the necessary permits, the reponsible party will be required to pay to an investigation fee established by the building official in addition to the required permit fees. The investigation fee will be equal to the amount of the permit fee. The payment of such investigation fee does not exempt any person from compliance with all other provisions of either this Code, technical codes or from any penalty prescribed by law.
Fire Department inspections
The fire department inspector inspects all commercial property with the building inspector at the final inspection. They also perform Certificate of Occupancy inspections, which are sometimes coordinated with the building inspectors. To help you better understand what the fire department inspector looks for during an inspection, refer to the Inspection Checklist letter.
