After a six-month national search, the City Council appointed Gary Ristow as parks and recreation director. Gary replaced former director Bill Nicks, who retired from the city in April after 29 years of service to the community.
Lake Lenexa and Black Hoof Park officially opened to the public in July. Visitors now enjoy the wildlife, trails, unique dam and spillway, picnic shelter, playground and lake recreation. A grand opening celebration is being planned for 2009.
Parks and Recreation Department debuted the city’s first annual Cupid’s Gems jewelry show, a juried event featuring original works from up to 30 local artists. The show joined the city’s regular lineup of annual festivals and events, including the Great Lenexa Barbeque – The Kansas State Championship, Spinach Festival, Midnight Bike Ride, Waterfest, Freedom Run, July 4th Parade and Fireworks, Enchanted Forest , Old Town Lighting, and the Chili Challenge.
To enhance the festival experience for residents and visitors, the city unveiled a new festival and event sponsorship policy to allow more opportunities for local businesses and individuals to participate in events at a variety of sponsorship levels.
