Residential Trash, Recycling and Composting
The City of Lenexa has several trash service providers which are licensed and approved as the companies responsible for the pickup and disposal of residential solid waste within Lenexa, Kansas. New residents are encouraged to call the companies at their earliest convenience to establish service, inquire about specific pickup schedules, and to have any other questions answered that might arise regarding the collection of residential waste as well as recyclable materials.
What is solid waste?
Solid waste refers to unwanted or discarded materials in a solid or semi-liquid state, such as yard, animal or agricultural waste, garbage, rubbish, trash and other special wastes.
How should solid waste be stored for pick-up?
The owner or occupant of a property must maintain that property free and clear of loose trash at all times. Residential solid waste must be stored in containers, except for brush & tree trimmings, which must be tied in bundles if not placed in containers. Containers should be of watertight construction or material to contain all odors and keep out flies and other insects. Please make yourself aware of the weight limits for the containers that are set by the collector.
Where should solid waste be stored before pick-up?
All solid waste containers and recyclable containers should be stored in the garage, rear or side yard of the structure, and out of obvious view from the street. The containers may be placed at or near the curb twenty-four (24) hours prior to the designated pick-up time. Brush and tree trimmings, tied in bundles, must be placed at the curb on the day of collection.
How should yard waste be prepared for pick-up?
Brush and tree limbs less than 4 inches in diameter must be tied in bundles. The bundles must be less than 48 inches long and 18 inches in diameter. They should be stored in the rear or side yard of the structure, and out of obvious view from the street, until the day of collection at which time they may be placed at the curb.
Can I compost at my home?
In Lenexa, residents are permitted to keep their own compost areas as long as the following city requirements are met:
• Compost must be stored in a container manufactured or constructed so as to contain all materials and permit turning to aerate the materials.
• The container and its contents must be stored in the rear yard and screened from view of adjacent properties at ground level.
• The container and contents must be maintained in a neat and sanitary condition and be free of odor.
• The compost area should occupy no more than 20% of available outside storage area.
Once the city requirements are met, you’re ready to begin composting. Here are a few simple tips to get you started.
