Each May, the Parks and Recreation Department plans a month of musical activities and entertainment for the community to celebrate May is Music Month. This year’s lineup includes the following:
May 2 – Mr. Stinky Feet concert for children ages 5 and younger, following Gym for Me. The concert will be held at 11 a.m. in the Lenexa Community Center. Cost is $1 per person.
May 9 – Senior birthday lunch featuring singing and piano entertainment by James Rojas. Entertainment begins at 12:15 p.m. in the Senior Center. This event is for seniors who are 60+ years old. Reserve your spot in advance with Johnson County Nutrition at 913.888.5141. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m.; a $3 donation is requested for the meal.
May 12 – Drum circle with Brandon Draper. This exciting, interactive experience will be part of the Black Hoof Park open house event, which runs from 10 a.m. to noon at the new Oak Shelter in Black Hoof Park. The event is free and open to the public.
May 18 – Movie in the Park (inclement weather date is May 19). Bring your blanket or lawn chairs to Electric Park and enjoy the musical, “Grease” (rated PG) on the big screen under the stars. The movie will begin when it gets dark, approximately 8:30 p.m. This event is made possible with the support of the Lenexa Arts Council.
May 1-29 – Music-themed art exhibit will be on display in the City Hall Art Gallery. The exhibit is coordinated by the Lenexa Arts Council. See information below regarding the call for artists.

Call for Artists (May is Music Month art exhibit)
The Lenexa Arts Council is seeking two-dimensional artwork that relates to music for the special “May is Music Month” art exhibit to be displayed during the month of May in the City Hall Art Gallery.
This art show will celebrate the beauty of music through visual presentation. Any medium will be considered, such as paintings, drawings, charcoal, pastels, photography, textiles, etc. Art must represent music in some way, but artists’ creativity in depicting music is welcome.
Artwork will be selected based upon artistic and cultural significance. General standards of decency and respect for cultural diversity will be considered when selecting art for this show. Limited space may not accommodate large art. Potential customers contact artists and pay them directly.
Rules:
- Artists must be 17 years or older.
- There is no entry fee for this show.
- Art must be artists’ original work and not have previously been shown with the Lenexa Arts Council.
- The Lenexa Arts Council reserves the right to limit the number of pieces displayed by a single artist.
- Artists must submit a completed entry form and liability form as well as a photo (jpeg preferred) of their work for consideration.
- Value of art must be stated on application even if the art is not for sale.
- Art must be ready to hang (must be backed with secured, sturdy hanging wire, and framed when applicable).
- Artist’s name and title of the art must be included on the back of each piece of art. Artist’s work will be identified with uniform display labels supplied by the Lenexa Arts Council. Artists are invited to provide an artists’ bio for inclusion in the artists’ binder.
- Art must remain displayed for the entire show, even if artwork is purchased.
- Staff will hang art with secure fixtures. Only a Lenexa Arts Council member may remove art from the wall.
- Artists will deliver their art to Lenexa City Hall, 12350 W. 87th Street Parkway, on April 30, 2012 between 3-5 p.m., and pick up their art from City Hall on May 29, 2012 between 3-5 p.m. unless otherwise arranged with the Lenexa Arts Council.
Important dates:
- Deadline to submit an application – April 16, 2012
- Selected artists’ deliver artwork to City Hall – April 30, 2012
- Artists’ pick up artwork from City Hall – May 29, 2012
