Bike Patrol

The Lenexa Fire Department Bike Patrol Team is utilized primarily for the proactive patrolling of the many miles of trails and park systems within the City of Lenexa, as well as for community festivals and special events. The intent of this program is to improve the overall public safety for special events as well as park and trail use. The Fire Department bike team is able to work with the Lenexa Police Department to set up specialized, joint-agency patrol teams. This team will be utilized to render assistance and first aid to the public as needed. The Fire Department bike team utilizes specialized mountain bikes set up for rugged use and able to carry the needed equipment and supplies to meet the mission requirements. Bicycle teams are better able to negotiate large and dense crowds during special events while maintaining a quick response capability.

Trail Rescue

The City of Lenexa has many beautiful miles of trails and parks for the enjoyment of the public. Some of these areas are difficult to access with conventional emergency response vehicles. The Lenexa Fire Department has multiple options for public aid in these situations. The Department maintains multiple 4-wheel drive vehicles, some equipped with specialized water tanks and pumps for remote areas. Additionally, there are two all terrain vehicles (ATV’s) capable of off-road and trail use which are set up to carry injured persons out of remote areas. The bike patrol team mentioned above is also able to access remote trails and off-road areas utilizing rugged mountain bikes.

Water Rescue

The Lenexa Fire Department maintains a specialized water rescue team for use in both swift-water and standing-water emergencies. The water rescue team is made up of members who have extensive training and certification in swift water rescue, swift water boat operations, and technical rope rescue. Additionally, every member of the Fire Department is trained in basic water rescue techniques and rescue team support. The Department has a complement of rescue boats with several different propulsion methods for use in different water rescue events. This team is also a regional and State resource and has been activated for mutual aid rescue events including the recent wide-spread flooding to the south. The Department also has the capability to respond to ice rescue emergencies as well utilizing specialized cold-water immersion dry-suits.
