1878 Soda Acid Extinguisher
The Lenexa Fire Department began in 1907 as a citizen bucket brigade. The first official piece of firefighting equipment purchased was an 1878 soda acid extinguisher, which is still on display by the Department. In 1923 the Lenexa Fire Department was officially recognized as a City Department with Lewis O. Krumm serving as the first Fire Chief. The Fire Department was all volunteer until the 1960's when four full time employees were added to the existing 32 volunteers. The volunteer force is no longer in service in Lenexa with the last volunteers ending their service in 1993. The Department is now 92 members strong.
The original fire station was located at Santa Fe and 93rd Street. Fire Station Two was built at 87th and Lackman in 1975. Fire Station Three, located just west of K-10 on 83rd Street, was annexed from Monticello Township in 1986. A new Fire Station One was built at 9620 Pflumm in 1986 and still serves as the Department’s headquarters. In 1990, Fire Station Four was built in the industrial park district located near 108th Street and Renner. A replacement Fire Station 3 was built at Prairie Star Parkway and Gleason Road and occupied in 2005, with the old one on 83rd Street being turned over to the Monticello Township Historical Society. A fifth fire station is currently being built and will be located in the geographical heart of the City on Prairie Star Parkway.
