Blasting for the purpose of construction excavation is allowed within the city of Lenexa by licensed blasters. A city blasting permit, issued by the fire department, is required. Individuals interested in using blasting agents for construction will need to provide information on the location of the blasting, location of the explosives bunkers (if any on site), phone number(s) of individuals responsible for the work, information on duration of the work and proof of insurance. Workers must comply with City Ordinance and the State of Kansas requirements for the use and onsite storage of blasting agents. Any complaints received from citizens will be transferred to the person(s) responsible for the blasting. Insurance information may also be given to interested parties.
Requirements to obtain a blasting permit:
- a Certificate of Insurance in the amount of $500,000 or more (the City of Lenexa must be listed as the certificate holder)
- payment of $30 per permit payable by cash, check or credit card (due at time of issuance)
- name and phone number of a 24-hour contact person
- location of the work (address or subdivision)
- duration of the work (length of time the permit is requested for)
- a copy of the blaster’s card
- a completed application (can be completed at the fire department)
Requirements to obtain a permit to store explosives onsite:
- a copy of the User’s Permit from the State Fire Marshall’s Office
- berms or fencing to protect the boxes
- plans showing the location of the storage
- a completed state application form
- a site inspection completed by the fire department
